I am have been having conversations with some of my website clients recently about starting an email newsletter and I wanted to share some thoughts on the subject today.
2 common mistakes I see when entrepreneurs are starting out with a newsletter are:
1) there is a backlog of ideas to share and the entrepreneur sends out long informative article after article, days apart and soon runs out of steam, or
2) one beautiful newsletter goes out and it was such a painstaking effort to do, that it takes weeks or months for another to go out…
This is not what I want for you! Too much or too little, is a problem.
So, first thing I want you to do is to decide, what kind of content do you want to send and then, how often do YOU want to send out something to your community?
The content you send out should provide value to the readers and be digestible… we are all busy people, swamped with email… so what format would best serve your particular community? An article? A story? A tip? A recipe? A resource? How often would they like to receive it?
Once you decide on a format and a frequency, be consistent! Start with something manageable for YOU! Perhaps every other week to begin with?
The tip I suggest to my private clients is to use a planner and plan out your newsletter content for at least the next 3 months. At twice a month, that is only 6 pieces of content. If you want to share different types of content, perhaps an article on nutrition and a recipe of the month, for 3 months, that’s just 3 articles and 3 recipes. Do you see how this becomes very doable? Also, if you’re feeling prolific and write 3 articles, you still only send out one each month… :o)
Planning out your information in this way, helps you build that consistency, so your community comes to expect and look forward to your newsletter in their inbox and avoids overwhelm and burn-out for you. Win:Win! My favorite kind of win!
And if you’re wondering where you will get a planner of this kind – don’t worry – I have one ready for you on my website – go ahead and download your complimentary copy by adding your name and email address to the box on the right – and I have a Bonus Money Manager for you too! :o)
Of course, there’s more to newsletters than this and if you have other questions about setting up a newsletter, templates, which service, etc, or if you found this useful, I’d love to hear from you, with comments or questions, here below in the Comments section, or on my Facebook page.
